Get Entrenched for Spring 2011

In a collection displayed on both mannequins and live models, Rachel Roy showed a lineup of largely upbeat-hued wovens. Some silk, sateen, and metallic threads worked their way into a very wearable collection, with some of the jewel-toned garments being shown in monochromatic styling. Roy dedicated nine pieces for Spring 2011 on the trenchcoat, which can be worn both as over coats and as dresses. With an eye for feminine detailing and precise cuts, Roy artfully placed strings, buttons, larger than life ruffles, belts, epaulets, and rouched sleeves on the trench coats, all in the traditional khaki hue. After viewing the collection, there was just one thing on my mind: "Do I really have wait until Spring 2011 to get one of these trenches?"

Fantastic Voyage

A journey through space and time is what Tracy Reese offered up for Spring 2011, with a myriad of prints, crisp colors, and practical cuts that make one yearn for both a resort getaway to wear them to, but also the opportunity for a fabulous roof deck cocktail party that would be equally as appropriate. Accessorized with over sized round translucent sunglasses and floppy hats injected a vintage '70s flavor into the collection, however it still captured the perfect balance between retro and modern without going in too much of a costumey direction. Dresses in shades of burnt orange and a slightly muted cobalt blue most certainly stole the show, however Reese also offered up incredible pieces in slate, cream, beige, and taupe. A favorite from the collection was a cream-colored apron dress with pockets and slightly curved-in straps -- a look that will work with almost any figure and skin tone.

I'm Lovin'...

...D & G Fall 2010!

Think of it as Dolce & Gabbana's younger, hipper, riskier sister. With the black & cream palette mixed with so much texture and whimsy, the look is definitely fun. Not to mention the brilliant pairing of all of those boots - genius!

A night of shining stars

This weekend the 100 Black Men of America hosted its annual conference in Hollywood, Florida. The conference culminates with a black-tie gala and awards ceremony that recognizes business, community and civic trail blazers. I was lucky enough to be one of this year’s attendees which is always a star-studded evening.

This year’s award winners included the legendary, Cicely Tyson and entertainer, philanthropist and fly jock, Tom Joyner, who both received a lifetime achievement award; Alonzo and Tracy Wilson Mourning received the 100’s Trailblazer Award for their work in the South Florida community through Alonzo Mourning Charities and the Honey Shine Mentoring Program for girls along with Dr. Matthew Plummer for his community activism and service in the Houston area; and the Honorable James Clyburn (D-SC) received the 100’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Government.

Following the awards ceremony the guests were serenaded by the beautiful voice of Vivian Green.

Rompers, shoes and wine - a perfect combination

Along with the renovation and street-scape projects in Miami’s mid-town district are a crop of can’t miss boutiques. Last week, I received an invite to Stella Boutique’s wine, cheese and shop – what the owner’s calls Miami’s only Shopping Happy Hour.

What are you wearing?
A Joie blouse, a Theory skirt, a Michael Kors watch, a Sorrelli necklace, and Marc Fisher shoes.

And where do you do your shopping: both online and brick and mortar stores?
I used to shop online alot before I moved to New York, but now it's a little more difficult to get the package. Since I live in New York, there are so many stores around me, so I try to make it Fifth Avenue, I like to walk around a lot! I also like shopping at Bloomingdale's.

What are some of your New York City go-to shops?
I like to go to Madewell, and American Apparel is great for basic pieces.

What is usually the integral piece for you when putting together a look, that you pretty much build your outfit around?
I always like to start with picking out the bag, as it is pretty important to making the outfit what it really, at least for me and my outfits!

Miami Fashion Week celebrates it's 12th year

While NYFW is a who's who of the world's most well-known fashion houses, Miami Fashion Week's runways were filled with emerging talent and some of Latin America's most celebrated designers. This year's event took place in Midtown Miami in the trend Wyndwood Art District.

World-renowned designers, entertainers, fashionistas and a throng of media attended three days of non-stop parties and events. More than 60 international designers revealed their latest collections in women's evening wear, prêt-a-porter, swimwear, men's wear, jewelry and accessories.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 Trends: Glitz, Glamour, and Asymmetry

During NYFW, we’ve took in over forty shows, which gave us a pretty good gauge of what the emerging fall/winter 2010 tends will be. Below are four major tends that you will want to take note of and incorporate into your wardrobes.

Metallics

Metallics continue to shine on for 2010; from mirrored embroidery to all over metallic lame gowns, it’s hard not to notice the heavy emphasis on this trend. Most designers incorporated something metallic into their collection this season, and without it, it could have easily been a sea of neutral tones. We love the evening looks of Naeem Khan and J.Mendel (below, bottom) as they worked gleaming metallics onto their runways, but also recommend a more casual approach to the gilt look by adding a sequined blouse lurex sparkly tights into your look.

Fur & Feathers

Despite the state of the economy, most designers welcomed fur this season in a variety of cuts, skins, and uses. Ostrich was a popular pick, appearing on evening gowns left and right, or used as trim; even peacock feathers took their turn down the runway at Douglas Hannant. It seemed that the longer, shaggier varieties of fur proved to be popular and was even used as massive arm warmers. The fur mainly appearing in more natural hues, with the exception of Custo Barcelona who created dynamic color combinations on his faux fur creations.

One-Shoulder Details

Asymetry is back in a big way, with the shoulder taking center stage this season. Although this look was popular in the early 2000s, it has now become more severe, draped, and bold. Many tops and dresses that found their way down the runway literally had a cold shoulder (largely the left one), with our favorites including those from Yigal Azrouel, Catherine Malandrino, and Milly.

Purple

The color purple was quite prominent this season – found as a splash or all over color used by many designers this season. Although we saw it in a variety of hues, the most popular was ‘Purple Orchid’, seen on the Rachel Roy runway and can best be described as vibrant shade of the color. Relish the rebirth of purple as the ‘it’ color and mix it into your wardrobe first as an accessory or shoe, then further develop it with tights, dresses, and finally all-over

color.

Rachel Roy's Nomadic Adventure for Fall 2010

Julia was able to capture a few shots from behind the scenes at Rachel Roy, one of our favorite designers. Roy's fall collection was inspired by nomadic adventures of North Africa and their colorful spice markets, mosaic tapestry florals and Moraccan military details.
