No Hiding Behind Your Hat...

With Easter on it's way, Sunday to be exact, it's not too hard to bend your mind toward hats.

Especially if you celebrate this special occasion and go anywhere near a church. Often big, elaborate, floral hats abound. Me, not being the big-elaborate-hat-wearer, I started looking around for alternatives.

Many are familiar with Philip Treacy, the extravagant hat designer. Naomi is sporting one of his designs below...

...a little cooky, but none-the-less fabulous.

And no one does cooky-hat-look better than the wonderfully eccentric Anna Della Russo.

Ok, so granted, I will not be trying to pull this look off any time soon (translation: never).

I did find these beautiful hats by Jennifer Behr though. They're bridal, but so pretty. I really think I can make the look below work...I mean, maybe...If I had too...

At any rate, both floral hats are stunning.

Be inspired to try on something equally as stunning this Easter. Or for those of you not partaking in this celebratory experience, try one on for fun. Take a cue from Anna, shock the neighbors and walk your dog in it. You'll be on the side of every animal rights activist and loved by every die hard fashionphile.

Just as I suppose a good therapy session might, it lifts my spirit.

Rihanna isn't 100% reppin' the look, but I think she's cute here & her shorts somewhat fit the trend.

Estee Lauder - New Beauty Ad Campaign

Estee Lauder has launched a new beauty ad campaign featuring models of varying hues & ethnicities. The purpose? To prove their new philosophy that "Every Woman Can Be Beautiful". Estee Lauder was once thought of as a brand that was formulated for a bit more "seasoned", lighter-hued woman. Well no more. Looking at models Joan Smalls (African American), Constance Jablonski (Caucasian), and Liu Wen (Asian) together definitely helps hammer home their point. Something we knew to be true all along!

When I saw the new focus of the brand, I knew I had to share my viewpoint. I've been using Estee Lauder's foundation for about a year and a half now. I was tipped off by a friend/aesthetician who recommended it to me.

Because my skin is what I call "hyper" combination skin, I really need something that does what I need it to do - well. By "hyper" I mean, my oily parts (forehead, nose, chin) tend to get very oily. Especially in this tropical South Florida weather (Nice for the body/mind/spirit. Not so much for the face.) Because if that, I'm always on the hunt for a good oil control/oil absorbent foundation that's also a perfect match for my skin tone. Enter Estee Lauder.

So, I'm putting myself (face first) on the line in order to demonstrate my point:

Below is a shot of me sans makeup. (Only a tiny bit of eyebrow pencil, bit NOTHING else)...

...YIKES, I know.

Not so flattering. And the oily t-zone thing is quite evident...

...Well, below is my trusted Estee Lauder Double Matte Oil Control foundation in Warm Ginger. (It's also oil absorbent with spf 15.) LOVE...

...And this, below, is happy me after application.

See? Muuuuch better, right?!!

I realize that finding that perfect product that is just-right for you can be an ongoing challenge. Especially for women of color. If your skin is anything like mine, I highly recommend Estee Lauder's Double Matte line to you. It definitely does what it says it will.

So a recent trip to The Beauty File led me to Chanel News. Love.

This all-things-Chanel site is intriguing. While happily browsing, I came across these beautiful backstage photos of Chanel's Fall/Winter 2011 show. What caught my eye most were the brooches the models were wearing. Not just on their clothes, but in their hair.

Lace Beauty Bar, Miami Beach

As promised, I have an "exciting showing of pretty" to share with you today.

My friend Karelle invited me to Lace Nail & Beauty Bar in Miami Beach for a grown-up-girl's- playdate. Karelle is head designer for her amazing fashion line, Krelwear, and Lace was hosting a pop up shop for her.

When you first walk in, you're pleasantly over-taken with "pretty". There's color everywhere! Turquoise, bright green, fuchsia & other shades of pink. It's so girly & fun.

Ok, so I admit it - I've been a bad blogger lately.

In a spirit of rebellion {I mean "busyness"}, I haven't been conversing with you guys much.

My apologies, please.

As does this photo of Beyonce in black-face, my absence has caused a bit of a raised brow, I know. Well, I've repented, asked for forgiveness, and have now turned the corner. I'll be back soon {tomorrow?} with an exciting showing of "pretty".

Speaking of "pretty"... as explicitly expressed by Pretty Coveted, it is always our goal to showcase "pretty" in all it's fantastical beauty. {It's never to highlight what's negative, nor to demean, degrade, nor poke fun of.} Having said that, this pic of Beyonce is definitely artistic & creative, but pretty? Hmmm, not so sure *head tilted*... I've seen prettier of her, like when she featured as one of our Unconventional Muses.

I certainly do love me some Bey, but what do you think though? Specifically, what do you think of her posing in black-face? Artistic? Necessary? Offensive? Don't really care?...

First Annual Hope for Haiti Gala Reception a smashing success

On Friday evening I attended the First Annual Hope for Haiti Gala sponsored by Milanda David, founder of Celebrity Glam Squad. The event brought two of my favorite things together – fashion and fast cars – in support of the Haiti Cherie Heritage Foundation, whose mission is to assist those in the rural areas devastated by the earthquake that struck the country in 2010.

Players Luxury Rental Car and Sales served as the backdrop for this uber stylish event and was transformed into a shopping lounge featuring delicious cocktails and hors d’hourves. Beautiful long-legged lovelies sported the looks of some of Miami’s hottest designers who were surrounded by the world’s most coveted automobiles including Rolls Royce Ghosts, Bentleys, Lamborghinis and me and my Ferrari.

Pageant Queen Kelly Saks, kept the night moving as the evening’s hostess. Some of the collections shown included works by local designers such as collections of Sarahi House of Fashion and Tanya-Marie Designs.

A stellar inaugural event that left us all anxiously awaiting for next year.

That's "T" for Tyra.

She really needs no formal introduction. Supermodel. Business Mogul. Super Genius behind America's Next Top Model. Inventor of the "Smize". {I know you all practice in the mirror - c'mon, admit it.} She's reached many great 'firsts' in her career, especially as a model of color. For that alone, I love her.

As if her stats that run a mile long aren't enough though, now she's gone and created another fashion-fused revolution. This ever-evolving Beauty recently launched Type F. It's a website that's more like a destination where fashion, beauty, style, and self-celebration abounds. I've browsed the site and find it to be really intriguing. I love the fact that it's purposed to tailor your fashion and beauty experience around what you naturally bring to the table - yourself! She's clear about it not being another fashion site where style, trends, and must-haves are dictated to you, and you then are expected to mold yourself into that box. On the contrary, the site takes you as you are and explains how to incorporate trends & looks accordingly.

And I cannot end without mentioning: as she's proven time and time again, Tyra knows how to take a genius photo...

On top of all that, Tyra is currently enrolled in Harvard Business School.

Genius move.

Now that's Type "F" for Fierce indeed.

...I'm baaack & with a true Beaute in tow! Her name?

And I just about love her.

Who is she, you ask? She's an up-and-coming supermodel-in-the-making and she's gooorgeous. Not only is she pretty, but she's French. Me, a self-proclaimed Fanco-phile, {enamored with all-things-french}, I was super excited to learn that about her. Just seems to make her more interesting and a bit more "model-y" in a way.

Anyway, I've been noticing her and am happy to introduce her to you. I also found this video of her being interviewed by the great Bethann Hardison. Here she talks modeling, how she was discovered, the photographers & designers she wants to work with, and who her favorite designers are {YSL, Givenchy, Valentino, Gucci, to name a few. The girl knows perfection when she sees it.}

She also chats about the lack of Black girls being featured in huge campaigns & why she doesn't understand that unfortunate truth. Although she is seen below in Gap's Spring '11 ad, she's spot on about the larger, most coveted of brands usually not showcasing Black talent...

Well one thing's for sure, she is a beauty who's worthy to cover any campaign .

I kept spotting Aminata backstage (and on the runway) throughout this fashion week at St. John, Lela Rose, Badgely Mischka, and more, and by her welcoming smile and cheery personality, I thought she would be great to for an exclusive interview at PrettyCoveted. Little did I know, since she was so modest, that she is already big time! Style.com just wrote an article, listing her as number one in their "Dream Girls: the models who made it big this season" feature.

Here's the backstage interview with the perennially sweet Aminata Niaria, backstage at the Lela Rose show.

Where are you from?

Senegal originally, but I'm French. I've lived in New York City for two-and-a-half years now.

How old are you?

How many shows have you done so far this season?

I just did two in Miami, and flew in yesterday, had a fitting, and I'm on the runway today! I will have more, but still am not sure of my schedule yet! My agency (IMG) has been very good to me, pulling me to do better shows from others.

What is your favorite thing about being a model?

My favorite thing is that I am the first one to wear the clothes, the first one to see them before they come available months later. I also love that we (models) are like actresses, taking on the personality of the clothes.

When you were a little girl, what did you want to grow up to be?

A lawyer.

What do you love most about fashion?

I love everything about fashion!

Who are your favorite designers?

I love Rodarte, Givenchy, Lanvin, Ralph Lauren -- I just really love clothes.

Rachel Roy Fall 2011

The early morning backstage scene was certainly a bit of a frenzied one, with Bobbi Brown herself putting the finishing touches on makeup while being interviewed for The Today Show, Ted Gibson checking hair, and the models rapidly lining up for the collection's photos prior to the presentation. For Fall 2011 Rachel Roy once again continued with her capsule collection of trench coats, this time done in denim instead of khaki fabric, and so meticulously draped, cut, and worked, that one had to do a double-take to realize that the material at hand really was the traditional workman's fabric of denim. Found in eight different styles, some of the descriptions for the fabrication used fanciful words such as "Japenese denim," "laquered denim" and "raw cut pleated denim."

Rachel talked about the hustle and bustle of life, and how as she has become increasingly busy, how effortless chic, i.e. trench coats and this collection, just felt right, for the woman on the go. Intarsia knits, ruffled cardigans, charmeuse dresses, and peplum jackets are certainly strong pieces to live on their own, and work other basics, existing in the wardrobe already, into the look. Kudos to Rachel Roy, for understanding her customer, and instead of catering to the season's trends, listening to what she really needs.

Cotton Candy...

Who doesn't love cotton candy? Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of the fair {being hurled uncontrollably in the air & dropped hundreds of feet - not my idea of fun}, and cotton candy is a bit too sweet for me, but I think it's so pretty to look at.

The rooms below that I found on one of my fave blogs Coco Kelley remind me of this childhood treat. They're both light, pink and pretty - just like that huge swirl of cloud-shaped sugar.

As you may have figured out by now, I like to play creative games from time to time. Like the one where I use lovely spaces as inspiration for wardrobe pieces {reference here & here}. These 2 rooms are perrrrfect for that game. Kind of a "Room To Runway". Here's what I came up with:

Melodie Monrose is modeling's newest "It Girl" & I love her!

She's a gorgeous beauty from the french isle of Martinique & she's this week's Unconventional Muse.

Her's is the classic tale of being plucked from the streets of her hometown on one day & planted on the runway of Paris & New York just days after - literally! This self-professed bookworm loves all-things-typical of an 18 yr old: hanging with friends, eating, shopping, seeing movies & museum hopping.

I think she's pretty terrific. Just have a look at her model card from Wilhelmina Models below...

What a monumental moment in Fashion history!

The day Beverly Johnson landed the most coveted cover of all time - the VOGUE cover - in 1974, everything changed {for the better}. That's exactly why she's this 'Monday's Unconventional Muse'. Beverly was, and still is, absolutely striking. I mean, her face cannot be denied. The Wardrobe Report

So recently, I was in Bloomingdale's {under the guise of picking up some "much needed" makeup} and was happily distracted over to the contemporary section. Unbeknownst to me, Bloomies was having a HUGE sale {Yipee!!}. While browsing the racks and racks of clothes, I came across this amazing little playsuit. So cute & comfy. Well, I could not believe my eyes & had to do a serious double take when I looked at the tag. The price?

Wait for it...

$8.67!!!!

Yep, you got it. Just a mere 9 bucks! So you know I HAD to have it.

After holding back tears of joy in the dressing room, I skipped my way out to the counter to pay.

With the weather warming up some days here in South Fla, I thought it'd be fun to pull it out. I ended up pairing it with a leather belt I have from Theory and my all -time FAV work boots that I seem to be wearing with everything. {Trust me, you WILL see these again later.}

And to top it all off, I grabbed my favorite, favorite, favorite earrings that I snagged from my Mom years ago. She wore these beautiful little filigree numbers when I was little - so to me they're true vintage. They're fabulous, they have sentimental value, and I LOVE!

So I realize we're currently experiencing the 'storm of the century' in most of the USA right now, but there's no harm in planning ahead, right? I also realize that this little gem I found smashed between 2 gorgeous dresses, will probably be near impossible to find, but you can still 'Get The Look' with these pieces I found below.

Unbelievably, Forever21 has an almost exact replica of my beloved work boots. {Worth a try} And yes, the shorts options are pricey, but as the weather warms up and spring arrives, I'm confident there'll be many options in stores, boutiques, and amazing flea markets everywhere.

Hope this inspires you to dig deep and be open-minded when making purchases. There's sweet little surprises all around.

So cute, right? Well, I'm actually thinking about zebra prints. Something about those graphic black & white {or even better - tan} stripes makes it all so interesting. Although the trench above in this beautiful photo is really quite lovely, the look head-to-toe may not be the most desired.

Instead, I've pulled a few options that will give you the look in a more subtle, but all the more stunning, kind of way.

Monday's {Unconventional} Muse

Veronica Webb

She's iconic for sure. Veronica gained superstardom in 'ModelLand' in the '80s & '90s. Noted as the first black supermodel to win an exclusive contract with a major cosmetics brand, she was a spokesmodel for Revlon, walked many miles on the best-of-the-best runways, and covered many major glossies. Check out one of her latest {below} as the Covergirl for the national launch of Jones Magazine.

Veronica is always clean, fresh and pretty with a whole 'lotta spunk. Here she is {below} in Christian Siriano Spr '10. This blue printed stunner looks like perfection on her.

Not sure how, but she somehow seamlessly represents the everyday woman in her very model-like-kind-of-way. I mean, she's a mom; she's an entrepreneur who's launching a handbag line in the fall; she's in the small circle of 'forever supermodels', but watching her it all seems attainable.

Just the right amount of...

Pomegranate + Ice

The icy almost 'nothingness' of this room is beautiful. Clean, light, and pretty. Then there's just the right amount of this gorgeous pomegranate color. So simple and then - whoa! - the couch draws your eye right to it. This piece perfectly positioned under the white window is quite stunning.

Because fashion is very often on my mind, I started thinking: 'what would an outfit inspired by this room look like?' I've done that before, like here, and here, but I'm so taken by this ethereal space that I feel compelled to do it again.

The look would have to be just as clean, simple, elegant and striking as the room. Here's what I came up with:

The fashion house featured this look in their Fall '10 fashion show & I LOVE!

How striking is this icy blue? Gorge, right?

I also love how most of them seem to disappear into the massive beehive of hair, like here...

And now take a look at the back. All you need is a super teased beehive pinned up in the back, and this cute little crocheted piece to tuck under the bottom.

The whole thing was very 1960's conservative vamp. Lovely. And being the "Jackie-of-All-Trades" that I am *wink wink*, of course I know how to crochet. {of course Dahlin', of course!} I think I might just have to venture into Prada-land and make myself a few of these treats. This girl is absolutely STUNNING! She's a beauty and her daddy just happens to be the funniest man everrrr - Eddie Murphy. The oldest child of Eddie and Nicole Murphy, she's really best described as 'One To Watch'. At 21, she's a model and the newest global ambassador for Dark and Lovely.

As brand ambassador, she'll not only be featured on the Dark and Lovely product box, but will also represent the brand for a year promoting their "Healthy 5" hair care system which aims to 'preserve and restore all 5 signs of healthy hair: moisture, shine, strength, softness, and body'.

{Don't we all need that?}

Bria says she wants to act someday like her father, but had to abide by his rule of not working until she was 18. {His hard and fast rule which allowed his kids to enjoy childhood.}

Another thing she says she learned from her parents is to 'stay true to herself' when it comes to the entertainment industry.

Sound advice from 2 mogul parents to 1 soon-to-be-mogul-model-of-a-daughter. I for one, cannot wait to see more of her. What do you think, Dears? Do you think she's as fantastic as I do?

Monday's {Unconventional} Muse

You know you've made it when you only need to say your first name & EVERYONE knows who you are.

Such is the case with this Monday's {Unconventional} Muse, Halle Berry.

Not much needs to be said about this stunner. Actress, Mommy, Beauty Spokesperson. She's most definitely an American icon. She's got that perfect face with an accessible 'girl-next-door' kind of quality that we all love.

I myself, have been a fan since the early days of Spike Lee. {Who knew someone so pretty could play a drug addict so well?}

Her talent precedes her, and her beauty does as well. Over time, she's perfectly pulled off many looks {long curly hair; shoulder-length straight hair; a mid-length bob; and the now famous short, spiky do.} Although I think she can do no wrong, I vote for the short, spiky look as my favorite. It's almost synonymous with her name. While there's literally a gazillion beautiful pictures of her, but I thought I'd concentrate on the look I covet most:

Making yet another appearance at last night's Golden Globes for her nomination for best actress, Halle had everyone gazing at her pretty, edgy look in this little black number.

Ms. Berry is a quintessential Pretty Coveted Muse. She does it all pretty well- all out glam, pared down casual, and everything in between.

She's true beauty inside & out.

Got a bike for Christmas. {Yay!!}

Since then, I've been having so much fun riding it around my 'hood. It's really my kind of exercise. Blue skies, beautiful trees, and sunshine.

Wouldn't it be kinda nice to ride around sporting {faux} fur, textured stockings and heels though?

I do love the hilarity of this photo, but don't think I'll be trying it out soon. {I'm sure her hair & makeup look nice & a bike ride would just interfere with all of that loveliness.}

Confession: This post happened sort of unexpectedly {even for me}. It was not my intent to write a Monday's {Unconventional} Muse story and feature Ciara. I was actually searching around for something unrelated and found this photo of her below...

...I was kind of taken a-back by it. It's a lot. I mean, it's big & fluffy, yet somehow luxurious...I like it. {Staring at it with tilted head...}

At any rate, I really do like Ciara too. So that settles it. Now's as good a time as any to feature her in our illustrious group of beauties. I must admit that I've never been able to get a handle on her "look" though. She's been every hair length under the sun. Every hair color too. She's glammy in dresses. She's punked-out in ripped jeans. Who is she exactly??

Not totally sure, but one thing's for certain, you can't deny her gorgeous face!

Fall, with a splash of winter, has finally fallen here in Miami and I was excited to dust off my boots and coats and step into some cozy things for winters brief stay stay. Other than those made by Juicy Couture, I have always thought sweats were best left for the gym but was intrigued by the more stylish looks that crept into this season's collections.

Art Basel: A kaleidoscope of art & fashion

Each year lovers of the arts converge in Miami in celebration of Art Basel. Lauded as the most important art show in the United States, the event features special exhibitions and participation by the world's most influential galleries. While parties were held all over the city, I knew that it was a "can't miss" when I received the invitation to the reception hosted by Vanity Fair.

The event was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in celebration of famed photographer Bruce Weber whose special exhibit of photographs celebrated the spirit and vibrancy of Miami's Haitian people. The exhibit also focused on the work of German artist Jonathon Meese showcasing his works of three-dimensional work and sculpture.

Got Me Seeing {RED}!

You have to admit, everything about this photo is captivating. The girl. The pony{tail}. The amazing jewelry. The belt. The shoulders. And of course, the bold RED. I really do love it all. It's so bold & avante garde, yet pretty at the same time. Well I seem to be seeing a lot of this look around lately. I think it'd be kinda fun to play around with it a little. 'Tis' The Season' after all, so red is the order of the day.

This Alexander McQueen genius-ness is a perfect representation of the look. If the rather pricey tag; however, doesn't fit into the budget {$7,640.00. YIKES}, perhaps we can get the look for less while still maintaining the genius of it all. Let's see...

Not sure how many of you had the pleasure of viewing Beyonce's I Am world tour DVD special over the Thanksgiving holiday, but it was an explosion of entertainment. She's proven again that she knows how to take the term "triple threat" to another level. I mean the dance moves alone - WHEW!... I was exhausted just watching. With that being said, it sure is fun trying to keep up with them though! {Note to self: using her videos as a dare-I-say - 'workout video' - may not be such a bad idea...}

And that voice! Ah-Ma-Zing! I have also had the pleasure of seeing her a few times live and it's as much a treat sitting in the audience {really 'standing' is a more appropriate word} as watching the show on tv was. She's just not stop. If nothing else, her work ethic cannot be denied. Totally inspirational, which is why she's this Monday's Unconventional Muse.

Turning our attention to fashion, I must admit that everything she suits up in isn't necessarily your typical 'ready-to-wear' type of gear, but whether she's the girl-about-town-on-a rainy day...

Have you noticed one of the newest beauty trends: bright, colorful eyes? You almost can't help but notice. Eyelids beautifully saturated with intense color seem to be popping up everywhere. Especially on the Spring '11 runways. Take a look around and you'll see gorgeous shades of green like on Oscar De La Renta's runway {above}.

You'll see fantastic shades of fuchsia like on Dior's runway {above}.

But chances are you'll also find colorful eyes 'smizing' {taken from the incomparable Tyra} everywhere on the street. Chanel Iman brilliantly displays the look while out and about {above}.

Not too long ago though I told you all about my experience with Jones Magazine as part of the host committee for their Meet Me In Miami event. Well one of the weekend's featured events was a design competition held at Miami Design District's oh-so-chic Mai Tardi. One of the participating designers followed suit with this beauty trend and glammed her models up in eye-poppin' eye color.

Take a look at the stunner of a model above. How amazing is her look?! Love the mix of lavender & green.

{Sick. Sick. Sick.}

This particular design competitor, fortunately for us, showed the look on a variety of skin tones. {Check the shot that I took above.} These pics are great examples of how women of all hues can incorporate the current beauty trend into everyday life.

So go ahead, play around a little. You'll be surprised at the beauty you can create with some amazing color, a brush, a little bit of courage, and lots of creativity!

Completely love this fresh-faced-not-so-new-on-the-scene model.

This rising star is one brilliant fashionista by anyone's standards. She's not only smart, talented, and has great style, she's also this Monday's {Unconventional} Muse. Kerry's been in some of the best films produced and is currently showcasing her talent in For Colored Girls.

Likewise, she certainly doesn't seem to mind showcasing her style-sense either. Let's just say a red carpet has proven to be her friend. I happen to love how she's embraced the fashion world. What could be better than donning a gorgeous frock on top of a red (or pink, or purple, or green for that matter) carpet? Hope you find her look as coveted as I do.

Meet Me in Miami

So Jones Magazine hosted Meet Me in Miami October 22nd-24th. Of course, I had to be in attendance! Aside from that, I was honored to be a part of the host committee for this inaugural event. So much fun to be had: fashion, beauty, events - it was all almost too much.

Monday's {Unconventional} Muse

Janet. Miss Jackson, if you're nasty...

The Beauty. The Talent. The Longevity.

It's all almost too much for one petite Powerhouse to embody. I mean who can really sing, dance and act well? The short answer is "very few", but Janet certainly sits at the top of the list. I absolutely adore her, all the way back to Pleasure Principle. {Emphasis on: ADORE}

Along with that, her style has been imitated by girls the world over. She's proven time and time again to be a true chameleon, mastering each look as she goes. Long hair; short hair; brown; bright red; straight or curly she does it all to perfection.

Her latest project is taking her back to the big screen. As a part of the ensemble cast of Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls, opening next Friday, November 5th, she's sure to bring it once again. As would be the case with one of her live performances, it would be an understatement to say that I can't wait to see what she has in store for us.

The Ritz-Carlton on South Beach was the back-drop for Blogalicious 2010 which brought together over 250 bloggers, social media incluencers and marketers. Newbies and seasoned bloggers attended conference sessions that were fun and informative such as "Pimp My Blog" and "Building Your Tribe."

The most fashionable part of the event - besides a surprise visit from mega stylist June Ambrose at the Blogalicious Beauty Bash - was the amazing collaborations, encouragement and support shared among conference attendees.

While the cool breezes of Fall kick up it's nice to revel in warm & cozy things. A great bowl of soup comes to mind, as does a soft blanket & socks. A nice shot of sunshine is always comforting too.

Spring 2011 served up alot of bright & cheery sunshine too. I'm lovin' all of the inspirational pops of color that I've seen so far. It's definitely shaping up to be a trend that can be incorporated into just about anyone's wardrobe.

I couldn't be more thrilled to sit on the host committee for Meet Me In Miami, a signature Jones Magazine Event happening Oct 21-Oct 24. In anticipation of this upcoming fashion fete, Jones hosted a Meet & Tweet last week. Held in the penthouse of South Beach's Hilton Bentley Hotel, the room was full of beautiful people, candles and champagne. Below are a few shots from the night that I took...

Showing jewelry during New York Fashion Week is always a challenge, however CFDA/VOGUE Fahion Funder winner Monique Péan had no trouble drawing the eye upwards toward her beautiful baubles from The Ahe Collection, a line inspired by a trip to French Polynesia. Taking a cue from aquatic life, Péan created jewelry of both big and small pieces of largely necklaces and some bracelets of both ancient and newer materials. Combining shells, fossilized woolly mammoth, walrus ivory, 18 carat recycled gold, sustainable mother of pearl, and conflict and devastation-free diamonds, the designer proved that beautiful creations can also be sustainable, eco-conscious, and philanthropic, as a portion of sales go to charity as well as Péan using local artisans to hand craft her designs. A favorite of the designer's was a large, white necklace (pictured) that included slivers of diamonds carefully worked in.

Get Entrenched for Spring 2011

In a collection displayed on both mannequins and live models, Rachel Roy showed a lineup of largely upbeat-hued wovens. Some silk, sateen, and metallic threads worked their way into a very wearable collection, with some of the jewel-toned garments being shown in monochromatic styling. Roy dedicated nine pieces for Spring 2011 on the trenchcoat, which can be worn both as over coats and as dresses. With an eye for feminine detailing and precise cuts, Roy artfully placed strings, buttons, larger than life ruffles, belts, epaulets, and rouched sleeves on the trench coats, all in the traditional khaki hue. After viewing the collection, there was just one thing on my mind: "Do I really have wait until Spring 2011 to get one of these trenches?"

Fantastic Voyage

A journey through space and time is what Tracy Reese offered up for Spring 2011, with a myriad of prints, crisp colors, and practical cuts that make one yearn for both a resort getaway to wear them to, but also the opportunity for a fabulous roof deck cocktail party that would be equally as appropriate. Accessorized with over sized round translucent sunglasses and floppy hats injected a vintage '70s flavor into the collection, however it still captured the perfect balance between retro and modern without going in too much of a costumey direction. Dresses in shades of burnt orange and a slightly muted cobalt blue most certainly stole the show, however Reese also offered up incredible pieces in slate, cream, beige, and taupe. A favorite from the collection was a cream-colored apron dress with pockets and slightly curved-in straps -- a look that will work with almost any figure and skin tone.
